Impact of Future Global Warming Scenarios in Rice Paddies

Rice agriculture increases the rate of global warming, i.e. more greenhouse gas per grain of rice. According to a study, it has been revealed that more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and rising temperatures cause rice agriculture to release more of the potent greenhouse gas methane (CH4) for each kilogram of rice it produces. Paddy fields have become one of the major significant sources for the emission of global anthropogenic CH4 and climate change has an effect on CH4 emission from paddy environment by changing the crop growth and soil environment. In future climatic conditions, the yield of crops is estimated to decline, and recent research studies have indicated that yields have already been affected. Although, the current impacts on sub-national plant diversity and the effect on food safety are uncertain. The ORYZA 2000 plant variety has been used in eight Malaysian granaries from 1999-2007 to simulate the rice yield of MR 219. In the scenario of 2℃ rise in temperature and current CO2 level of 383 ppm, the model predicted a rice yield decrease of 0.36 t ha-1.
