Advanced Material Engineering and Nanotechnology for Improving Sports Performance and Equipment
1Mohammed Nader Shalaby, Mohamed M Saad
The recent research and development (R&D) activities on advanced materials engineering and nanotechnology has the great potential to revolutionise the multifunctionality of smart nanotextiles, thin film complex oxides, nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and conducting polymers needed for improving sports performance and equipment. This article reviews both current and future state-of-the-art research and development (R&D) projects worldwide on novel nanotechnological wearable flexible strain sensors required for monitoring and assessing the physiological and biomechanical variables of the athletes. On the other hand, the effective impact of nanomaterials science and nanotechnology on sporting equipment industry will be also discussed in more detail. Overall, this will be the first time that the use of materials engineering and nanotechnology coupled with their novel practical applications in improving sports performance and equipment will be scientifically reviewed.
