Management of Foreign Body Ingestion among Children Admitted to Benghazi Pediatric Hospital

Abstract:

Ingestion of FB is a global health problem commonly seen in accident and emergency departments, occurring mostly in children. The objectives of the study were to studysociodemographicfactors relatedtoforeignbodies’ingestion,todescribe symptoms and signs associated with foreign body ingestion, to determine types of foreign bodies ingested and to illustrate management of cases. Methods: Descriptive case series design using review of medical records of all foreign body cases admitted to Benghazi pediatric hospital. All records of foreign body cases admitted to the hospital during the period between January 2014 and July 2017 were included in the study. Results: The highest frequency of cases (62.50%) was among those aged 1- 3 years. male were more prevalent (54.69%) compared to females (45.31%). drooling of saliva was the commonest symptoms (39.06%) associated with foreign body ingestion, also cases had combination of drooling of saliva and dysphagia represented 29.69%, followed by those who had dysphagia alone represented 26.56%. Ingestion of coin was the most common type of foreign bodies ingested (62.50%), followed by food bullous (12.50%). All foreign body cases were managed by rigid endoscopy. Most of foreign body cases (98.4%) had excellent outcome as they were all alive and well, only, one case died.
