NAIL LACQUERS IN TRANSUNGAL DELIVERY OF ANTIFUNGALS TREATING ONYCHOMYCOSIS

Onychomycosis is the commonest fungal infection of nail affecting both fingers and the nails of the foot. This infection is initiated by dermatophytes, nondermatophyte molds and yeasts. Nail lacquers are topical solutions for employ only on the fingernails and the toenails and have been found to be beneficial in onychomycosis treatment. Transungual therapy is considered highly beneficial for the treatment of nail disorders, because of its localized effects, increased compliance resulting in limited adverse clinical events. Nonetheless, because of the least drug permeability through the nail plate, effectiveness of the topical therapies is limited. Itraconazole is widely used in the treatment of onychomycosis through oral route of administration, but their physicochemical properties restrain its bioavailability. Therefore, it would be advantageous to use itraconazole topically instead of administration through oral route in the treatment of Tinea unguium. Therefore, in this study an attempt to emphasis on the treatment aspects of the onychomycosis, itraconazole nail lacquer was developed and characterized in vitro using analytical, spectral and microbiological techniques to exhibit its potential in treatment of Tinea unguium
