Abstract:

Berberis aristata is an essential medicinal plant which is used for treating the problem of rheumatoid arthritis, including some other inflammatory disorders in the conventional medicinal system. Herbal therapy is becoming increasingly common in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Traditional system of medicine possesses its rich patrimony of herbs that could be beneficial in gastrointestinal disorders, discomfort and in reducing pain. Unfortunately pharmacological screening for most of those herbs to substantiate their traditional use is still lacking. It was evident from the literature survey that the isoquinolone alkaloid obtained from Berberis aristata no report on the inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD) is still found. IBD herbal treatment studies reported in Medline and Embase were reviewed and treatment response and remission frequency rates were recorded. While the number of the clinical trials involved is relatively small, the efficacy of herbal therapies in IBD can be believed to be encouraging. In the present invention the treatment of IBD is done by a quaternary salt of ammonium obtained from the protoberberine group of isoquinoline alkaloid of stem of Berberis aristata. Traditionally, it is used in the treatment of microbial infections, abdominal spasms and diarrhea. Recent studies have demonstrated that the active phytoconstituent of Berberis aristata and its derivatives have significant biological effects on gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in the treatment of diarrhea, gastroenteritis and some related disorders such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular diseases and inflammatory conditions. IBD is a disorder characterized by cramping, abdominal pain, dyspepsia and diarrhoea.
